Built around hanging: a big swivel hook opens out from inside, and the bag unfolds into pockets you can see into from the towel rail. It holds several days of toiletries and includes a removable shower caddy that hangs on its own hook, which solves the shower with no shelf. The flip side of a bag designed to hang is that it will not stand up on a counter. L.L.Bean sells it in four sizes; our source does not say which it used, and the medium is the usual travel size. No price: L.L.Bean served us its international store in euros.

The small one: a litre split in two, with a toothbrush side kept apart from the bottles, and a silicone strap that loops over a towel bar or the outside of a backpack. Pack Hacker's team uses it themselves for trips of a day to three. Open one zip at a time, or the other side can tip out. No photograph or price: Gravel's site sent us to its European homepage.

What actually matters
Where the hook is, and whether it swivels. A hook inside the bag keeps the bag closed when packed and swings out when you need it. A swivel lets it face you from a rail on either side.
What happens to things when it hangs. A bag that is organised for a counter can dump its contents upside down on a hook. Look for shelves, mesh dividers or zipped pockets that hold things upright when the bag is vertical.
Water resistance. It will sit next to a shower and get packed with damp bottles. Coated nylon or water-resistant fabric stops a leak reaching your clothes.
Size for the trip. One litre is a weekend of travel-size bottles. A bigger hanging organiser suits a week or two people.
Flying with one
US and UK airport rules still limit liquids in cabin bags to containers of about 100 ml in a clear bag at many airports. A hanging organiser does not replace that clear bag, so pack the liquids you will need at security separately or choose a transparent kit.
