Accurate to one degree and steady for half an hour — which is the whole argument for buying a temperature-controlled kettle rather than boiling and guessing. It was also the fastest of the lot. At $120 it is $80 cheaper than the fashionable one below and rated higher.

What actually matters
The gooseneck spout. A narrow, curved spout is what gives you a slow, controllable pour that lands where you aim it. A standard kettle dumps water, which agitates the bed unevenly. This is the single biggest difference in the cup.
Temperature control, to a degree. Different roasts want different water temperatures — broadly cooler for lighter roasts, hotter for darker. A kettle that holds a set temperature removes the guesswork and the kettle-and-thermometer routine.
Hold function. Being able to keep water at temperature through a brew matters more than fast boiling, because a pour over takes three minutes.
Balance when full. A heavy kettle with a high handle is hard to pour slowly, and slow is the point.
Where this comes from
We do not test kettles. Our source does, and its durability testing is the most bloody-minded we have come across in any category: lids removed and replaced 50 extra times, kettles lifted off and returned to their bases 100 extra times, washed 10 extra times, then 50 extra boils — and for the winners, 365 further boils, simulating a year of daily use. They also knocked each one over on the counter to see whether it dented.
Temperature accuracy was measured against an instant-read thermometer at several set points, which is the number that matters for coffee and the one manufacturers are vaguest about.
What we are leaving out
Stovetop gooseneck kettles, which are a different product without temperature control, and anything over about 1.2 litres, which is too heavy to pour steadily when full.
