The bag for going to the gym from the office: a padded compartment for a 16-inch laptop kept apart from your kit, mesh panels so damp clothes air out, and two bottle pockets. Only $10 more than the standard size, and the laptop sleeve is better padded, though Pack Hacker would still only trust a 13-inch laptop to it. Buy it for sports with bulky equipment. For a gym session, it is more bag than you need.

What actually matters

Separation. Damp kit and shoes should not share a space with a laptop or work clothes. A separate compartment, or at least a divider, matters more than any other feature.

Ventilation. Mesh panels or holes let damp clothes air out between the gym and home, which is the difference between a bag that smells and one that does not.

Size. Around 25 litres takes shoes, clothes, a towel and a bottle. Go bigger only for bulky sports kit.

Tough fabric. Gym floors and changing rooms are hard on bags. Heavy nylon such as 1680D ballistic survives being dropped and dragged.

A shoe pocket, with a caveat. Handy for keeping shoes apart, but on many bags it takes room from the main compartment rather than adding it.

Take damp clothes out as soon as you get home, leave the bag open to dry, and wash the lining occasionally. Ventilated bags help, but no bag fixes clothes left in it overnight.
Duffel or backpack for the gym?
